What BOP Covers
BOP says its inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. If the listed release date is in the past and no facility location is shown, BOP explains that the person was released and is no longer in BOP custody. That is a federal custody answer, not a Washington County sheriff release record.
A person can be out of BOP custody and still subject to federal supervised release, Colorado court obligations, a state hold, local charges, or immigration custody. Conversely, a person released from Washington County Jail to USMS or BOP custody has not necessarily been released to the community.
How to Check BOP
- Use the BOP locator at bop.gov/inmateloc.
- Search by register number when known, or by name.
- Compare age, race, sex, release date, and facility status shown by BOP.
- If release date is past and no facility is listed, treat it as no current BOP custody.
- Check Washington County court, CDOC, ICE, or sheriff records if another system may still be involved.
Federal Records and Transfers
USMS does not provide the same public pretrial detainee locator that BOP provides for sentenced federal prisoners. If Washington County Jail says the person was released to USMS, use federal court, the attorney of record, agency contacts where appropriate, and BOP if the person later enters BOP custody. Ask the jail whether the release destination was USMS, BOP, ICE, CDOC, another county, or the community.
Federal vs Local Release
For a local Akron jail release timestamp, request the sheriff's booking and release record. For a federal release date, use BOP. For federal supervised release, consult federal court records or appropriate federal supervision channels. Do not use a county jail page as proof of a completed federal sentence.
